Keeping it Cool
With Easter almost over we can be sure that summer is well on it’s way. Which would make now the perfect time to make sure the cooling in our homes is efficient as possible.
A few ways to do this, if you haven’t already:
Replace your air filters. Common sense on this one. Dirty filters trap air, making the system work harder overall.
Add weather-stripping where needed. This keeps hot air out, and cool air in. If you want to spend a bit more you can hire someone to do a blower door test, which will show you exactly where in your house air is escaping.
Make sure you have a programmable thermostat and install one if you don’t. Keep the air set at 78 degrees while you are home.
If you don’t have them already, make sure all of your windows have shades on them. These can be pulled down to keep the sun out during the summer. Also a good idea, awnings that cover and shade the window from the outside.
Open your windows at night rather than running the air conditioner.
Have your A/C serviced. This should be done yearly.
Make sure your A/C vents are not blocked, trapping air and making the system work less-efficiently.
If, by chance, you have not done it already…though…I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t have…change your light bulbs to CFLs that burn cooler than the standard ones.
